Vanessa Crow sees her job as a parent as more than packing lunches and registering for camps. Her interest in public policy--she's a graduate student at N.C. State--arises ultimately from trying to do her part to make the world the best possible place it can be for those who come after her, including her offspring. Which is how she can be so passionate about something as seemingly mundane--yet of great importance--as the U.S. Census. As chair of the Complete Count Census Committee of the League of Women Voters of Wake County, Crow is trying to make sure every resident of Wake County is counted in this year's census. We talked details of the census--including a first ever online option--with Crow and ask her how she got involved.

We also talk about a hockey hero who came out of nowhere to having an official Raleigh "day" and the local semifinalists for James Beard awards.
