One of the main themes of the book of Ephesians is Church unity. Paul wrote Ephesians to a mixed Church of both Jewish and Greek Christians and is calling for unity within the Church of Ephesus. Paul emphasized that both Jews and Gentiles are saved in the same way that they are to walk in unity. Paul exhorts the Ephesians to walk worthy of their calling. Walk means to live suitably as those who have been called into the Kingdom of God. How can one who considers all that God has done for them by the power of His grace do anything other than walk worthy of the calling? We are to walk worthy by entering into the privileges of the Gospel through faith and walking in them so we reflect these great privileges and magnify the saving work of Christ in a way that brings glory to God! We are to walk in lowliness toward on another. We are to walk in gentleness toward one another. We are to be longsuffering with one another. We must endeavor to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. To endeavor is to make every effort, strive, and be diligent. All true regenerated Christians are of one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God and Father of all. All of these things true Christians have in common and therefore we must be unified as one! God also grants gifts of grace for ministry. These are for the equipping and edifying of the rest of the Church. The purpose is that all come to the unity of the faith, all come to the knowledge of the Son of God, all come to perfection! But in order for this to take place all must grow up in all things into Christ. Only then can the whole body be joined and knit together in Him.
