Jonathan was the son of Saul and he was going to be made king. In many ways he is an example of what it means to be a Christian in these three characteristics: piety, humility, and selflessness. Jonathan was not perfect but he was loyal, trustworthy, and dependable. Jonathan loved God as David did and they had a kindred spirit. They sought God alone for strength. They worshipped God in their hearts and lives. They were both men after God\\u2019s own heart. They lived by faith in God and knew when they died that they would be with the Lord. Jonathan honored God by anointing David instead and taking off his royal robe and giving it to another. Humility motivated Jonathan as it did Christ when He washed His disciples feet. Jonathan stripped himself of what he was and he laid it aside for the sake of others. Christ made Himself of no reputation and became humble to the point of death, even the death of the cross. As a believer we must take command over the thoughts of our minds and intentionally lower ourselves. We must be disciplined in our minds by faith. Jonathan laid down his life in selfless sacrifice fighting the enemies of God. Jonathan loved the Lord and Israel and he had faith in the power of God. Jonathan died so Christ could be born. We must die so He may live in us. Jonathan had Christ-like loyalty. He did what he did because he loved the Lord. He suffered the loss of all things and counted them rubbish that he may gain Christ. We must not honor men or ourselves more than God. We cannot follow the words and thoughts of other men. We must be mindful of the things of God. May we show Christ-like loyalty to our Heavenly Father.
