Much had taken place in the life of Joseph to bring him to this moment, much suffering, trial, hardship, and difficulty. Upon his command all of his servants leave and Joseph reveals his identity to his brothers, and he wept aloud. This was the moment that all of his trials had brought him to, from the moment that his brothers had sold him into slavery 22 years before. Joseph’s brothers are silent before him. They fear that he will take revenge upon them. But Joseph had forgiven his brothers and he tells them not to be grieved or angry with themselves. Joseph acknowledges the providence and sovereignty of God even in the midst of the trials he had been through. Joseph acknowledges that if he had not been sold into slavery in Egypt then both Egypt and Canaan would have perished in the famine. Here in the end he attributes all to the overruling providence of God. Over 22 years Joseph had sought the Lord for an answer as to why all this had taken place. Joseph now acknowledges that what had taken place had been on account of God’s overruling providence. Joseph acknowledged that God does not permit any temporal evil that does not clear the way for a greater good. Joseph’s brothers had sold him, but it was God who sent him. If this had not taken place the people of the covenant would have been wiped out. All the sons of Israel would have been no more. The twelve tribes of Israel would have perished. Joseph tells his brothers to go and tell his father of his testimony. God had worked all things together for good. God had brought about a great deliverance! Pharaoh pours blessing upon blessing upon Jacob and his family. He provides for every step of the journey.
