It was a packed courtroom Tuesday for the hearing of Ernest Tertelte, a Manhattan man who says he's being wrongly prosecuted for trying to feed himself.
Ernest is 52 years old. He was arrested on Monday and is accused of fishing without a license and then resisting arrest.
He appeared before the judge via video from the Gallatin County Detention Center, and it was standing room only. More than a dozen friends and family members filled the small courtroom.
Earlier this month, Ernest and another judge got into a heated exchange. He argued that the court did not have the authority to charge him with a crime for finding food in nature with which to feed himself. He told the judge she was violating natural law. When she threatened to charge him with contempt and send him to jail for speaking out of turn, he then yelled, quote, "Do not tell me to shut up! I am the living, natural man, and my voice will be heard!"
When the judge noted that he had pleaded not guilty, Terteltge countered, quote, "I never plead, animals plead." Without ending the proceedings, the judge walked out of the room, and Ernest took the opportunity to make his exit.
A friend of Ernest’s who attended the hearing said, quote, "It's we the people that run this and rule this country, not we the courts, not we the government, and if the people don't start standing up for themselves and for each other, we are going to continue being subjects of this government."
Ernest is out on ransom from the local lockup. His next court hearing is scheduled for January.

IN OTHER NEWS, Can government ban you from growing vegetables in your own front yard? Hermine Ricketts and Tom Carroll are a married couple who have resided at their home in Miami Shores, Fla., for more than 20 years. For 17 of those years, they grew vegetables in their front yard for their own consumption. Because their backyard doesn’t get sufficient sunlight, the front yard was the only place where they could grow their veggie treats. But now, after 17 years, their peppers, onions, and lettuce, offended city bureaucrats. They said veggies are quote, “inconsistent with the city’s aesthetic character,” and forced the Carrolls to rip up their garden or pay $50 a day in fines. Fruit, flowers, and flamingos are all okay. But not vegetables. If you think this makes no sense, you can help the Carroll’s save their vegetable garden by going to IJ.org. That’s the website for the Institute for Justice, an organization that fights for individual rights. That’s IJ.org

Norman Gurley, age 30 from Ohio, isn’t the first person to be *arrested* for nothing, but he *is* the first person to be *charged* for nothing. Norman is facing drug-related charges, despite the fact that state troopers did not actually find any drugs in his possession. Last year, bureaucrats passed a law making it a felony to alter a vehicle to add a secret compartment with the “intent” of using it to conceal drugs.
Norman was pulled over for speeding when somehow troopers noticed wires running to the back of the car, which led them to a hidden compartment.
Police said, quote, "Without the hidden compartment law, we would not have had any charges on the suspect.”
Given this is the first arrest, I wonder how the courts will rule on a law that makes it a felony to alter a person's own property.
And what happens to the car now? Well, the hidden compartment law exempts vehicles being operated by law enforcers, so the cops stole the car and can keep it for themselves. Law enforcers in Ohio have already collected more than $80 million from asset forfeiture.
