John Stossel writes at Reason.com this week that we should be thankful for the bounty that private property provides. The European settlers of North America struggled to feed themselves for years after their arrival because their communal setup failed. Each worked according to his ability, and ate according to his need. Sounds fair, but it ended up nearly wiping out the entire population, until plots of property were established and families took personal responsibility for working their own land. We have plenty of turkeys on the table because of private property. One way to show gratitude is to remember that lesson.

One place people are still learning that lesson is Greece, where people on average are 40% poorer than they were during the 2008 worldwide economic crisis. The economic downturn, which has now lasted over 6 years, has robbed a generation of young people. Less than half of Greeks under age 25 have any job at all, even fewer have full-time work. The so-called austerity measures have seen cutbacks on government services, but bureaucrats are still the most comfortable class. The IMF has managed Greece’s crisis in much the same way it has managed similar situations in Africa. It has made the country dependent on its injections of debt, while its policies of austerity make the population poorer. The World Health Organization reports this week that HIV rates in Greece have risen “significantly” since 2008. It estimates about half of new HIV infections are self-inflicted, quote, “to enable people to receive benefits of 700 euro per month and faster admission on to drug-substitution programs.” What can we learn from the example of Greece?

A recent experiment on rats yielded some interesting results that may teach us something about a human’s relationship to addiction. One scientist postulated that it’s not the drugs, but the cage that matters. When rats are stuffed into a tiny cage, hooked up to a controllable morphine drip, they dose until they die. However, in this new experiment, the cages were 200 times bigger, there were 16–20 rats of both sexes in residence, an abundance of food, balls and wheels for play, and enough space for mating and raising litters. The result? Rats who had been forced to consume morphine for 2 consecutive months were brought to “Rat Park” and given a choice between plain tap water and water laced with morphine. For the most part, they chose the plain water. The scientists noted, quote, "Nothing that we tried produced anything that looked like addiction in rats that were housed in a reasonably normal environment." What can this experiment tell us about ourselves? The controlled experiment has been tried and retried with the same results.

In other news, thousands of merchants will be joining "Bitcoin Black Friday" tomorrow, selling everything from Christmas trees to clothes, to web domains. Get discounted plane tickets from Cheapair.com by paying in bitcoin. Reddit is also offering a deal on "Reddit Gold." Gyft is also selling gift cards to Amazon.com, Target, and Marriott hotels.
