Hey everybody, Welcome to Peace News Now, your daily journal of peaceful resistance! I’m DerrickJ. Today’s Saturday, December 7th 2013. 1 ounce of silver is 20 dollars. 1 Bitcoin is 730 dollars.
Nelson Mandela died Thursday in Johannesburg at 95 years old. Mandela helped South Africa break the practice of racial segregation and do away with white minority rule.
Imprisoned for nearly three decades for his fight against state-sanctioned racial segregation, he was freed in 1990 and quickly set about working to unite the nation through forgiveness and reconciliation. Mandela said, Quote, "As I walked out the door toward the gate that would lead to my freedom, I knew if I didn't leave my bitterness and hatred behind, I'd still be in prison.” His rejection of vengeance led him to assume roles that led from freedom fighter to prisoner to a world symbol of the struggle against racial oppression. And, four years after he left prison, he became the nation's first black president, cementing his place in the consciousness of the nation and the world. He later vocally criticized the imperialist attitude of United States as quote, “a threat to world peace.”
In other news, in September, New York Police officers responded to an emotionally disturbed man causing a ruckus at a Times Square bus terminal by opening fire on him while they were surrounded by crowds and traffic. They missed him and instead hit two innocent bystanders (one of whom was using a walker). Police said at the time they thought the man was reaching for a gun, but he turned out to be unarmed.
Even though the man was not armed, an indictment unsealed this week is charging him with assault for the injuries caused by police gunfire.
The lawyer representing one of the women who was wounded, said the charges should be against the two officers who fired their weapons in a crowd. Quote, “It’s an incredibly unfortunate use of prosecutorial discretion to be prosecuting a man who didn’t even injure my client. It’s the police who injured my client.”
In other news, what do libertarians do when the suddenly become wealthy? Well, one man is working on sending a bitcoin node to space! The idea is to have several small satellites orbit earth with an always-updated version of the blockchain. It could beam blockchain information to any node that wanted to communicate with it. The project is estimated to cost just $2 million dollars. This will progress in phases, with an estimated demo date of 2017. The developer, Jeff Garzik says, quote, “All it takes is one honest source of block chain data to defeat a Sybil attack and similar attacks. Eventually, the honest block chain with the largest proof-of-work will win the day.”
A restaurant in Maine was given a Cease and Desist order by the state after raising over a half a million dollars for charity this year. The letter, which arrived right before Thanksgiving, informed the do-gooders that they needed a license. The restaurant posted on Facebook Quote, “We are upset we can’t continue to help cancer survivors raise money for treatment or help schools raise money for programs that have been cut from budgets, but until we are in compliance, we must CEASE AND DESIST giving back to our community!!” Without govt bureaucrats, who would shut down the unlicensed charities?
In other news, Kaveh Kamooneh was arrested last month for stealing five cents worth of electricity from a school when his electric car was low on juice and he plugged it into the building’s outlet. Kamooneh took the liberty of charging his car at the school’s exterior outlet when he was suddenly approached by police who charged him with theft.
Kaveh said, quote, “[The cop] said that he was going to charge me with theft by taking because I was taking power, electricity from the school.”
Kamooneh reportedly charged his car for about 20 minutes, taking .05 cents worth of juice. The Police said quote, ”I’m not sure how much electricity he stole. He broke the law. He stole something that wasn’t his.”
The cop didn’t arrest him at the time, but filed a report. Two days later, multiple cops came to his front door to arrest him at home. Kaveh spent 15 hours in jail before he was released.
The police say the force they used is justified, and the time and money spent caging and prosecuting the man over $0.05 is well worth it, because, quote, “A theft is a theft.”
