Press Conference on 2019 Leaf Management Approach

Published: Oct. 23, 2019, 2 p.m.

Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway, City of Madison Engineering Division staff and City of Madison Streets Division staff will share the City’s approach to leaf management for Fall 2019. ‘Leaf tea’ is something every resident should be mindful of this season, and the impact it has on our lakes. ‘Leaf tea’ is created when leaves are left in the curb and gutter, and rain dissolves phosphorus off the leaves into the stormwater system, which then flows to our local waterways. There will be a demonstration of how leaf tea happens, the detrimental environmental impact it has on our waterways, proper raking technique and multiple pieces of equipment used for leaf collection. Staff will also share new information about a leaf collection pilot underway, sweeping strategies and past studies that helped shape the City’s approach moving forward.
