0305 - Scissor me timbers

In episode 5 of Season 3, we will discuss Lizzie Halliday - an Irish-American serial killer. She was born in Ireland in 1859 but moved to the United States when she was still a young child. She married her first husband in 1879 and then sent her young son to an institution after her husband died. She moved on rather quickly though…running through and tossing out husbands as if they were expired produce. In the mid-1880’s, after her attempt to kill another husband went awry, she fled to Vermont and married someone new. However, that only lasted a couple of weeks before she fled again. In the late 1880’s, she ended up in Philadelphia, where she committed arson and fraud…landing her in the Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia for 2 years. Upon her release, she immediately married again…but this will be the last time. She murdered her friend, her friend’s daughter, her stepson, her husband, and a peddler. These murders landed her in jail AND with a sentence of death. This would have made her the first woman in history, executed by the electric chair – BUT things change. She ended up serving her time in a mental institution with a life sentence as she was declared criminally insane. Lizzie committed one final murder before her death in 1918…and it was quite disturbing…
