Dixie Mafia Part Two

b'Episode 98 left us with the downfall of the State Line Mafia operating out of Tennessee and Mississippi. We discussed Sheriff Buford Pusser\'s role in bringing down the organization and the wacky events that surrounded the legend.

Our second part of this story will focus on Deep South outlaws and a homegrown crime cartel that operated along the bayous, bays and swamps of the Gulf Coast cropping up like kudzu and equally hard to get rid of.

In their heyday, the Dixie Mafia had their thumb in every pie, whether it was illegal gambling, drug trafficking, money-laundering, blackmail and bribery, or carrying out contract killings.

Led by criminal mastermind Kirksey Nix, Jr., the Mafia lifestyle became something out of a Hollywood movie. The liquor flowed freely, and drugs and women were everywhere. They did their business in flashy casinos and smoky bars; the party never stopped and few were willing to cross them--especially testify. Anyone willing to rat them out would be killed, no doubt about it.

This criminal syndicate had friends in high places, including members of law enforcement and powerful attorneys, maybe even a few politicians.

Mountain Murders will look into the Dixie Mafia, their crimes and ultimate downfall.
