b'In the grim lifestyles of homeless youths, instant and transitionary friendships are as routine as day and night. In the late 1980s in Sydney, New South Wales, a group of transient youngsters drifted in and out of each other\\u2019s lives just as easily as they drifted around Sydney\\u2019s streets and the city\\u2019s rail system. Studies have indicated that a common characteristic of young violent offenders is the alienation from families and often from the community as a whole.

The displaced youngsters were all well-known to police but in 1988, they became well-known to the world after committing one of the most vicious crimes in Australian history.
