The Green Decree – Weight Loss and Our “Good” and “Bad” Food Labels

Years ago, when I was a kid…you know…back before there were things like dirt and the wheel. We were on a vacation in Florida. Like most folks on vacation, most of our meals were the “eating out” kind and when I say, “eating out,” I mean “cut loose!” My only reason near the “green stuff” at the buffet was to grab a plate. Personally, with all the dietary restrictions placed upon me as a kid at my home, this was more than an all-you-can-eat, it was my personal CHALLENGE!

“On your next trip,” she declared, “I better see you get something green on that plate.” - Mamma

My mission was clear…my mother’s instructions…forgotten. “I thought I told you to get something green on your next trip to the buffet!” My mother wasn’t one to forget her parental decree.

Truth be known, I had forgotten all about the “green decree” she made before my last run. But, there was my desert, a bowl of "green" Jello, “What color do you think this is?” My comment was neither wise nor witty. It was dangerous!

I love telling stories. There's more to this story (told in full in the podcast and on the blog post).

In this episode of Mondays Kept Me Fat, Nurse Kevin explains the reasons why we identify food as either being "good food" or "bad food" and now these labels "transfer" these descriptive terms into a personal identity and how they affect our weight-loss and health ambitious. There's a better way...a more healthy way to "see" food.
