I\\u2019m so excited to hear what you think about today\\u2019s episode because I think this topic is super important! There are so many causes of anxiety & depression but today we\\u2019re talking about the hormone connection to it and what we can do to support ourselves.

  • Birth Control causes or makes depression & anxiety worse.
  • In 2016 there was research from the University of Copenhagen that revealed the birth control pill and other hormonal contraceptives (including the hormonal IUD, patch, and ring) could actually be causing depression for some women. This study tracked over 1 million Danish women between the ages of 15 to 34 over the course of 13 years. None of the women had a history of depression, but upon starting with the birth control pill, hormonal IUD, patch or ring, developed depression at significant rates. The researchers found that women taking the combined (estrogen and progestin) pill were 23% more likely to be diagnosed with depression and those using progestin-only pills were 34% more likely.
  • Depression is related to our hormonal balance. It makes sense then that adding synthetic hormones that block our body\\u2019s own production of hormones and replace the hormone cycle can cause depression.
  • When in balance, estrogen makes you feel good and social & progesterone makes you feel motivated to get things done. When these are imbalanced, however, it can lead to feeling foggy, lethargic, anxious, moody, wanting to cry.
