The Academy’s Board of Governors approved THREE MAJOR changes to the Oscars. First, they’ve added a new Best Picture category tentatively called the Best Popular Film. There are multiple angles to dissect, there’s a film twitter backlash to discuss, and there’s a fascinating set of implications to debate. You get all of that from us here. But if that’s not enough, the Academy made two more humongous changes to make things get even crazier. They’ve moved up the date of the show and therefore shortened award season. They’ve also put a hard cap on the broadcast time to make it a 3 hour event, pushing many speeches and below the line technical category presentations into the commercial breaks. We predict what the aftermath of these two huge changes might be, and we debate why the Academy is doing what it’s doing.
