We recap the 2020 Golden Globes! Now these may be our immediate reactions as we hit the record button minutes after HFPA announced their final award. But we spent all day doing stats & all year building up to this big night. It’s the first of many, & we’re already having too much fun. “It Was A Funny Night.” - :50 Funny How? - 1:30 THE BIGGEST STORY: Best Director - 3:23 Best Picture Drama - 8:03 Final Tally/Which Movies Did Best/Worst? - 10:05 Power Ranking The Best Picture Big 4 - 12:20 FILM CATEGORIES RECAP + REAX: Foreign Language Feature - 13:10 Best Screenplay - 16:05 Animated Film - 18:41 Best Supporting Actress - 22:04 Original Score - 26:05 Original Song - 29:23 Best Supporting Actor - 31:25 Best Actor Comedy or Musical - 34:01 Best Actress Comedy or Musical - 37:51 Best Picture Musical or Comedy - 39:49 Best Actor Drama - 43:14 Best Actress Drama - 47:13 Odds, Ends, and Random Thoughts - 50:12 Your Homework/PLEASE LEAVE US 5*’S - 52:35 What’s Next From MMO/Words of Wisdom - 53:38 We begin with a chat about the night’s strange brand of comedy before diving into our lead story. The long shot victories for 1917 in the Best Director & Best Drama categories were the Globes’ biggest surprises, and we discuss what these mean. Did The Irishman take a hit? How could Mendes beat out Bong Joon Ho, Scorsese, and Tarantino? And how do we rank the Best Picture contenders coming out of this? The tallies on the night were somewhat surprising. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood took home the most awards, but Joker, 1917, and Rocketman each took home a pair. After discussing the scoreboard, we recap the rest of the 14 film awards from beginning to end. Parasite won Best Foreign Language Film to no one’s surprise, and Bong Joon Ho dropped some pearls in his speech. Tarantino set us up for another reversal with his acceptance of Best Screenplay, Missing Link defeated 3 Disney films in the Animated category, and the Supporting Actress award went back to its predestined Laura Dern-ness. When are we gonna love Best Original Song again? Did 2019 crown a new phenom composer with this Best Original Score? And did Brad Pitt have the best joke on the night? We should have known Taron Egerton & his Elton John concert campaign was gonna charm the HFPA. But we’re not left feeling silly for long because it’s time to be happy for one of our favorites as Awkwafina took home her first Golden Globe. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood followed through on its betting odds, Joaquin Phoenix delivered the strangest speech of the night, and Renee Zellweger remains the frontrunner in Best Actress. Also Mike looked up Oscar crossover stats for all 14 categories, & Mike 1 quoted most of the best lines of the night. Though we may have been overly caffeinated, we definitely had fun over-reacting to all of the night’s big winners. If you enjoyed this episode, please visit our entire catalog of film loving content.
