***This is a Spoiler Free Episode*** In our award show format, this is our overview of ALL Basketball Movies. We don’t spoil any of the ones that matter. Documentary Section: NCAA, NBA, etc... Best 30 for 30 / ESPN made Docs - 4:36 Best non ESPN made Docs - 13:19 Best Doc about the Knicks (Also Mike’s Favorite Team) - 18:03 Best Doc about the Celtics (Mike No. 1’s Favorite Team) - 20:50 Movie Section: Guide to All the Movies in Contention: From Hoosiers to Space Jam - 22:38 Best Roster AKA Ensemble - 34:02 March Madness is here. So we decided it would be a fun time to break from the Oscar hopefuls for a short series on basketball movies. As fans of the sport and the movie world, we’ve seen just about ALL of them throughout the years. (Even the ones we think we haven’t seen, in fact, we realize during THIS broadcast that we have actually seen them!) This makes the Mikes of Oscar uniquely qualified to give you a complete look at hoops on film. We’re equal parts serious film critics and nonsense loving fans as we break down the best performances, characters, scenes, soundtracks, scripts, genre films, commercials, etc... that involve the sport. Part one begins with the documentary films. We still feel pain and rage from our favorite teams’ many failures, especially those during our formative years. So you can laugh at our pain, especially those of you out in La La Land. ESPN has made some of the better films of the last 20 years in their 30 for 30 series, and we begin there with the best college, pro, and offcourt drama docs. Then we discuss some of the HBO, Showtime, & other non-ESPN made films before deciding upon our picks regarding the docs about our favorite teams, the Celtics & Knicks. Before we dive into all of the non-documentary movies about hoops, we profile each of the films we’re aware of in a fun introductory segment. We heckle some of the lousy films that won’t show up as much in our nominees, and we tease some favorites. Then we begin with a taste of what’s to come in Part II later this week by presenting the first of our many, many basketball movie awards for Best Assembled Roster in a Basketball Movie. Part II is chalk-full of these types of awards as we dole out categories ranging from Best Coach to the Most Unstoppable Player award, we have fun with this list of awards. But it all starts here with the groundwork we lay. You don’t wanna miss this episode, fan or not. Agree or disagree? What are your favorite hoop films? Feel free to chat with us on social media. We’re on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Reddit, and Gmail. If you’re enjoying the post-Oscar programming, do please also help us spread the word about our podcast. A few clicks or a friendly recommendation can really help us. We do appreciate it. Stay tuned for Part 2 of the Basketball Movie Series. After that, we’re gonna begin analyzing the films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe leading up to Avengers: Infinity War. We’ll have another Oscar Retrospective coming soon, and we’re planning movie reviews for new films about to be released in a theater near you. So we hope you enjoy our spring programming. As always, when reality sucks, watch movies with us. We’re a year round movie podcast, and who says we can’t have some fun in the off-season. We’re Mike, Mike, and Oscar.
