Breath - Pentecost 2020

Pentacost 2020 --- Acts 2:2-8 Today we mark the descending of the Holy Spirit to the church. In echoes of the original Pentecost when Moses brings the Law to the ancient Hebrews, the Spirit comes in wind and fire upon the disciples proclaiming the Gospel. It signifies that the power and Spirit of the Most High dwells within those who claim God's Word. But though the image of the Spirit here is often portrayed as fire, the most prevalent representation of the Spirit was that of wind or breath. And so we pause to consider where the Spirit is today when a man had his own breath stolen under the knee of injustice. The murder of George Floyd has once again brought the brokenness of our institutions and relationships with one another into sharp focus. We cannot celebrate the breath of God today without accepting the responsibility that comes with that gift to speak for the oppressed, as Christ himself did time and time again.
