An Unexpected King

Come, Lord Jesus --- Matthew 1:1-16 Believe it or not, we have reached the season of Advent. Each year, we spend the four Sundays leading to Christmas recreating the anticipation the people of Israel felt awaiting the King that would save them. The book of Matthew begins with a genealogy of Jesus, linking him principally to Abraham and David. The intention is clear. After a king chosen by the people turned inward and became selfish, Samuel anoints a young man who is a dozen siblings removed from who anyone would have expected in Jesse's home. Jesus, too, is the unexpected King: arriving in peace and love from a virgin in a stable. When the leaders who are supposed to represent us have failed and a difficult year has left us weary, our hope lies in the Lord and in deliverance from unexpected places.
