A Journey to Preserve Gullah/Geechee Language & Culture From SC to Harvard Univ.

b"Sunn m\\u2019Cheaux is a native of a Gullah/Geechee Family from Mt Holly, South Carolina. He is an artist, actor, writer, poet, singer skater, chef, conversationalist and is on a journey to preserve the Gullah/Geechee language, the culture, the family land and \\u201cMama\\u2019s House\\u201d. Sunn m\\u2019Cheaux has the prestigious honor, to\\xa0teach 7th graders\\xa0from Cambridge Public Schools cultural roots, identity and language, inside Harvard Hall at Harvard University. He says his\\xa0goal for his classroom is to be a space of learning & living the languages he teaches.\\xa0Growing up on land owned and tended by his family dating back to 1850, Sunn m\\u2019Cheaux tells the story of how his great grandfather planted an oak tree that now towers above Rural Low Country Land, family land. \\u201cMama\\u2019s\\xa0House\\u201d \\xa0as he affectionately refers to it, was the heart of the community, having\\xa0her chicken coops clucking, billy goat grazing, ornery geese chasing, wild pecans, cherries, persimmons, muscadine grapes (bullets), apples, vegetables & all the blackberries her skirt-tale could carry from her own yard,\\xa0caught on fire, displacing Mama from her home and the land. The family and some \\u201cGood Samaritans\\u201d are banding together to rebuild it this year.\\xa0In an climate of gentrification, developer land grabs and urban sprawl, education & raising awareness to the plight of we Gullah/Geechee peopleis essential.
