Encountering An-other

Published: Sept. 18, 2019, 6 p.m.

This Sunday, the fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost, we will continue our sermon series on the Book of Deuteronomy. The series is entitled Words for People on the Border.

The text(s) we will explore together come from Deuteronomy 1:20 - 3:3; chapters in which Moses recounts Israel's journey in the wilderness. The historical narrative recounts three times in which the people encountered "other" people and an "other" land. In each encounter God speaks and the people act. Sometimes they act in accordance with God's Word, other times they rebel against it.

The text causes us to wonder what should we do when we come to the border of God's promises and we feel too afraid to cross over? What do when God's promises extend to other people and places? What do we do when God issues the command to confront, conquer, and take possession?
