Why Trump Failed

Trump is considered a populist leader yet many persons who one might assume to belong to the lower class, failed to be captured by his message. Many elites, who one might think, ought to be alienated by his support of the lower classes, supported him. Either people are not as populist think or the idea of populism as espoused by Trump is analytically flawed. But both possibilities tell us populism as commonly conceived is not analytically sound. Can the concept of populism be rescued to make sense of the fact Trump, by his own terms, is part of the elite and that he lost the election primarily because many poor and lower class voters preferred Biden.
