There are only two possible states for mankind to exist in. The common state is one of primitivism. The other is the state of civilization. Civilization is not defined by technology. Technological expertise is a symptom but not the cause of civilized living. Correlation does not indicate causation. To be civilized is to be civil. The community that permits incivility to happen without it having a cost to the perpetrator is a society in which incivility pays. Civilization cannot endure incivility. If society rewards and does not penalize incivility, it faces economic and social collapse.
