Rethinking Citizenship

Citizenship is not a gift of the state or a reward gifted to those who have pledged fealty to the state. Nor does it signify that one is a member in good standing of a class of persons attached to a political jurisdiction. A citizen is not a subject. A subject is a legal class of persons defined and regulated by the state. Subjects compose the state but citizens are separate. This is not a physical division but a logical one. The citizen contains different information than that which constructs a subject. The state determines the nature of a subject. The citizen is a natural category created by God. One is a citizen of the kingdom of God regardless of if one is a subject of a state or not and regardless of the nation one is a subject of.
