Everyone extols the virtue of democracy, and we all abhor the idea of mass movements and the destructive power of mobs, but it is difficult to know what differentiates them, or how to stop one from morphing into the other. A democratic majority whose will is thwarted has no problem reverting to mob rule and forming into a mass movement. Though we often remind ourselves that truth is not a popularity sport and peer pressure does not make things right, we still believe that a majority can decide policy. Even were this true, what policy can be simplified into a slogan and what policy that cannot be simplified into a sound bite has a chance of defeating an idea that can be promoted as a pithy aphorism? In this discussion we look at the implications of democracy and how it has made nations worse.
