The question as to the meaning of life is a perennial question of philosophy and religion. Even politics and economics discuss the problem but in more circumspect ways. Political parties main bone of contention is that other parties do not understand the central questions of life, including what gives purpose to existence. For most people liberalism has provided the main source of our values. Free speech, liberty, freedom and so on are all the products of liberal thinkers. Conservatism on the other hand has remained largely in the background. If anything conservatives seem to be the main hindrance to humans obtaining their freedom and full liberties. But property understood conservatism is the first order principle, for it alone understands that competition cannot supply a foundation on which purpose and meaning can rest. Conservatives belief life has value and it is this preservation of the value of life that is important. When we begin to devalue human life, we eliminate life of purpose and meaning.
