Topic of the Day - Meeting Engineering

Result: To do a deep dive into a tool we mentioned in Ep2, Meaningful Meetings, called Meeting Engineering. We will provide the definition of meeting engineering, different tools, examples of how we have used meeting engineering in our work, and how you can apply these tools in your own worklife.

  • Definition of Meeting Engineering
    • A series of tools to use to prepare for a meeting - “engineer it,” if you will! A series of “pre-work” tools to do before you have your meeting
  • Results At the Center
    • Template
    • Make sure that the people you need to achieve your result are invited
  • Once you have your list of people, schedule brief meetings with them to achieve a few goals, based on your relationship and the result of your meeting
    • Get to know them and their work
    • Listen! Take note of how their work in particular aligns with the result of your meeting and then, two options
      • If it clearly aligns, name that and say this is why you'd love their voice and input, and clearly state the result that you’re working towards
      • If, after they have given you context for themselves and their work it seems like they may not be the best fit for your result, let them know what it is you’re trying to achieve and ask them if they know who might be a good fit.
        • Considering power dynamics, ask if they would be willing to make an introduction. This often holds more weight than you emailing and saying, “so and so encouraged me to reach out to you.”
      • Once you’ve got your people and their buy-in, it’s time for a composition analysis
        • Composition Analysis Template
  • Mel’s Mindful Minute
    • End of day/meeting journaling reflection

  • We Are Always Students
  • Sharing is Self-Caring
    • Self-care - Start With You!
      • Self-care
        • Do a composition analysis on yourself!
    • Community-care - Taking Care of Others
      • Do the composition analysis with your team!
        • Diversity in org
        • Have each person do their own row, so that they are self identifying
    • Systemic/Structural-Care - The Wider Systems We Live & Work In
      • Look at leadership - how is the composition different from your team? From other departments?
