Authentication is how someone (often a website) verifies you are who you say you are, also known as your \u201cidentity.\u201d The basic idea goes back thousands of years \u2013 any time a sentry said, \u201cHalt! Who goes there?\u201d he was taking the first step of authentication. Websites use authentication when you \u201clog in\u201d using your username and password, which is how a website essentially asks the same question \u201chalt, who goes there?\u201d Enter the correct information and you are \u201cauthenticated\u201d and can access the website.
