Since the inception of the Black Reel Awards in 2000, television categories have always been combined with film in a single awards presentation. That process ends this year as the Foundation for Augmentation of African-Americans in Film (FAAAF) has created a spin-off awards presentation for outstanding television achievement for African-Americans and those of the African diaspora.

There are a strong group of nominees vying for top prizes in Dramatic, Comedy, and TV Movies/Limited series categories including Black*ish (10 nominations), The New Edition Story (9 nominations), Marvel's Luke Cage (8 Nominations), as well as both Empire and Insecure (7 nominations each).
