Takahata-cast Part 4: Pom Poko and My Neighbors the Yamadas

Eric and Jason have now come to the part in their Takahata reviews where they have to wrestle with the whole question of how to think about magical raccoons and their even more magical testicles, as they discuss Pom Poko. There's a lot to say about the film, with its commitment to ecological themes, its oddly despairing tone and its suitability next to Takahata's other films, but wow, those testicles are just so strange.

Then they discuss My Neighbors the Yamadas, a kind of polar opposite film but also famously one of Studio Ghibli's few financial failures. Does the film's unique art style and quirky commitment to magical realism work for Eric and Jason? Well, they certainly have some thoughts...
