Kurosawa-cast: the Exquisite Sadness of Dreams and I Live in Fear

Published: March 20, 2023, 1 p.m.

Eric and Dom are back for the latest deep dive into Kurosawa films, this time looking at two films which might not seem like they have a lot in common but which in fact resonate deeply with each other. I Live in Fear, Kurosawa's follow-up to Severn Samurai, is perahaps the most downbeat movie of his career, a real tragedy about a deeply flawed man whose life spirals out of control when he becomes obsessed with the idea of nuclear war. Well, maybe his life spings more out of control, as we explore here. Dreams, one of Kurosawa's final films, is a chronicle of several of the film master's most interesting dreams, and contains some stunning color photography and some deeply thoughtful meditations on Japanese society as seen through his eyes.

Both movies are underrated masterpieces, and we think you'll enjoy our conversations about them.
