Island Conversations #40 -- Black Fire, White Fire--the Kona Beth Shalom Torah

Published: Nov. 3, 2019, 4:15 p.m.

The West Hawaii Jewish congregation Kona Beth Shalom has custody of a Torah that was created more than 250 years ago, and survived the Holocaust.  How did it make its way to Hawaii?  The story was intriguing enough that filmmaker and former Big Island resident Sara Nealy created a documentary, Black Fire White Fire, about the Torah.  Longtime Kona Beth Shalom member Dr. Barry Blum and Sara Nealy share the story with host Sherry Bracken, and talk about the premier of Black Fire White Fire coming Saturday November 9 at Pirateer's Cove (former Hualalai Theaters)  in Kailua Kona, at 6 p.m. ( Register for this free event at blackfirewhitefire.com) Air Date:  Nov. 3, 2019
