During a time when the Irish language, teaching and celebrating Mass was outlawed, the people often met in secret to keep the old ways. Code words might be used, as in ... are the apples in bloom?, if the answer was yes, then it meant, yes, a secret meeting was on that night - it might be held at the Mass Rock, or another hiding place. So we may sing of the apples, or ask if our love was out and about and well. The yes or no answer, was indeed to another question altogether.
