ICFRC: Inside Cuba

Published: Feb. 3, 2011, 10 a.m.

Professor Ann Estin speaks about her recent trip to Cuba with 25 others from the Agudas Achim Congregation -- observations, perceptions, first-hand accounts, and the political & economic dynamics currently in play. In fall 2010, Professor Ann Estin, Rabbi Jeff Portman and other members of the Agudad Achim Congregation in Iowa City had the opportunity to do what few Americans have done - travel to Cuba. Ann gives an overview of current political and economic conditions and touch on one of Cuba's common phrases, 'In Cuba we pretend to work, and the government pretends to pay us'. The U.S. media has recently reported changes in U.S. interactions with the country under the new rule of Rual Castro. Ann comments on these changes and the country's new focus on economic growth. Professor Estin has been on the law faculty at the University of Iowa since 1999. She teaches and writes primarily in the area of family law and international family law. She has written numerous articles and is co-author, with Barbara Stark, of Global Issues in Family Law, and with Homer H. Clark, Jr., of Cases and Problems on Domestic Relations (7th ed. 2005). Professor Estin also teaches Contracts and Federal Indian Law, and she serves as a pro bono consultant on professional responsibility issues for the Native American Rights Fund. She is a member of the bar in Colorado and Iowa.
