In June 2008, floods destroyed the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center on Kirkwood Avenue. Before the waters even receded, plans were underway to rebuild, and now, seven years later, the new facility is finally completed. The new center is located at 3910 Napoleon Lane, off of Gilbert Street and Sand Road in Iowa City.

This ribbon-cutting event commemorates the efforts of numerous public-private partnerships that allowed the new 11,236 sq. ft. structure to become a reality. The Center's nonprofit fundraising arm, Friends of the Animal Center Foundation (FACF), provided critical financial support with a $1 million local fundraising campaign.

The new Animal Center offers numerous upgrades over the old site, including more space, separate rooms for separate species, an animal evaluation and surgery room, more efficient heating and cooling systems, and other improvements that benefit animals and staff alike. It will provide animal services for Iowa City, Coralville, University Heights, the University of Iowa, and unincorporated Johnson County.
