Gigi Karmous-Edwards is the owner and designer of Uvo Luxury. All of Uvo’s designs are infused with Gigi’s values of quality and functionality and her love of style and fashion. Gigi started Uvo Luxury in pursuit of fulfilling one goal: to design and produce her vision of fashion-forward, stylish handbags for professional women, something that had eluded her as she traveled the world giving talks on her research. She searched for years for the perfect handbag to take her from her work meetings directly to stylish dinners to no avail. She named the company, Uvo (pronounced You‐vo), which in Italian means egg and symbolizes life, rebirth, and renewal. It was the perfect word to represent the career transition from research science and engineering to artists and entrepreneur. Prior to becoming an entrepreneur, Gigi had a long and successful 27-year career as a Research Scientist and Engineer focusing on global optical communications. She has led several research and development teams throughout her career on novel and bleeding edge technologies. She served as chairperson on several global committees and conferences. She has several publications on her research along with a book on Grid Networks. In her new entrepreneurial career, Gigi leverages her engineering mindset with her creative skills to create designs that combine the perfect mix of art and science and has established a profound connection between creativity in scientific research and aesthetic, functional design in fashion. Gigi has a B.S. in Chemical Engineering, a M.S. in Electrical Engineering and is currently completing her PhD in Electrical Engineering.
