Overview: This video explains the concept of extent of reaction, which finds widespread use in Chemical Engineering. The units of this quantity in closed as well as open systems are considered. Finally, it is emphasized that the numerical value for the extent of reaction is independent of whether it is obtained from a materials balance on a reactant or on a product of a given reaction. It is also independent of the control volume taken to analyse the process.
