Everyone should have received money during Covid, Why we didn’t need the IMF, Why GDP is a bad measure and more| Busi Sibeko – Part 1

Published: Oct. 7, 2020, 6 a.m.

This week I bumped into Busi Sibeko. Busi is an economist and is currently working for the institute for economic justice. Busi features regularly in Parliament, where she challenges the Budget and other economic reforms proposed by the government. She also is a prominent economic commentator where she shares her economic views and solutions.

In part 1 of this episode we touch on:

-         Why its false to think people have children for grants.

-          Why we should not have cut national spend.

-          The cost of austerity.

-          Why GDP is not great measure to tell us the state of the economy?

-          We demystify the R500billion (why we didn’t have to go to the IMF) and the avenues we did not explore.

-         How south Africa was the second country in the world to introduce gender response budgeting. But since then we have gender blind budgets, child blind budgets etc.

-      So much money was shuffled into building field hospitals, but what about the current hospitals.

I hope you find value in Part 1 and if you ever feel so inclined, please share, comment and give us feedback. Remember to stay safe and continue to light up the dark my friends.
