A new festival (by Japanese standards) started in 1964 in Tohoku, it is now one of the four major festivals of the area.

A parade that now has up to 10,000 individual dancers wearing hanagasa (a hat decorated with artificial flowers) originally had them doing the same choreography. Today the 100 different groups, who are all dressed the same will have their own interpretation of the dance.
