This was a bulletin that was broadcast to the American people on Dec. 24, 1941, just 17 days after Pearl Harbor. After two weeks of battle the 400 Marines who held off the Japanese invasion of Wake Island, ( Photo ) have finally surrendered. This was a major story at the time and emphasizes the tremendous role that radio was about to play during World War II. It was the only form of immediate mass media available to US citizens and became a vital life line as to how the war was going... there were of course, more than a few times that the government censored the broadcasts for security and morale purposes.
