Two back to back episodes from 1935! In our last Episode, Lum was in Jail because town folks thought he had been stealing things ... evidence was that he had big feet and the footprints were big... that was it. But in the first episode, Lum is released from the town jail and just in time to start is campaign to be elected to the office of President of the Jot 'Em Down Country Store that was soon opening in town. Abner is also running for President of the store and he doesn't take to kindly that his friend, Lum, is doing some campaigning behind his back. Sponsor is Horlick Milk... and they are giving away small flashlights if listeners will send in a box top and 10 cents for S/H! TEN CENTS! Lum uses the promotion to ask people to vote for him... and that riles up Lum who is about to put his campaign into high gear! Goff and Lauck worked together from 1931 to 1954 producing about 5000 shows, of which 1600 are known to exist today. Wouldn't be great for someone to find some transcription discs of the approximately 3000 missing shows? The show was a dialect comedy featuring rural country humor. In 1936 Lum ran a humorous campaign for the presidency offering people who wrote in campaign buttons. But they were blown away when over 250,000 listeners wrote in for the buttons! This was a hugely popular show. Keep in mind, neither Lauck nor Goff liked the term "hillbilly" and they weren't about making fun of the people who lived in AK... they just wanted to have a show that recognized a culture and way of life that many people knew nothing about... and the show was a hit!
