Hollywood Lux Radio Theater - Show Boat - Feb. 11, 1952 - Musical

With music by Jerome Kern and book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II based on Edna Ferber's best-selling novel by the same name, "Show Boat" has become a classic in musical theater, not just because of the music, but because the theme or racial injustice and prejudice and a tragic enduring love were fresh and new in 1927 when this was first performed on Broadway as produced by Florenz Ziedfeld. Several movies and radio adaptations have been done as well. This 1952 version followed a 1940 version, but this show closely followed the story as told in the 1951 film that starred Kathryn Grayson, Ava Gardner and Howard Keel, who also appear in this radio adaptation. Program will be in the "Variety-Comedy-Musicals" playlist.
