The Relationship Triangle Theory

Sometimes it’s valuable to get the male perspective. This week, Lyn chats to entrepreneur and author Rob Smallbone, who joins the podcast today for a frank and candid conversation around the relationship issues he’s had in the past, the effects of travel upon his love life and his hopes for the future when it comes to love. KEY TAKEAWAYS Rob’s past experiences left him angry and close-minded, but through a lengthy period of travel, he found himself, while also discovering much about relationships, the world and the way it works. For the past few years, Rob has co-habited with a female housemate, which has given him an entirely new perspective on the opposite sex. Don’t make mountains out of molehills - petty arguments all chip away slowly at the foundations of a relationship, and half the time aren’t worth bothering about. Men often think that women are hard work, when that’s not necessarily true. There’s just a vast difference in the way we think, and it needs to be understood. Rob’s relationship triangle theory works on the principle that many couples begin at the base with work and life, then work up to a single point, whether that’s marriage or children etc. But by beginning with the single point at the base of the triangle, our relationship(s) can spread out to encompass work and life. Rob admits that the effects of his parents’ divorce have damaged his outlook on relationships, and makes it hard for him to develop relationships with new potential partners. Learning from our own mistakes as well as those made by others, and doing our best to ensure that we don’t repeat those mistakes, is the best way to find true love and happiness. Men are unfortunately more prone to bottling up their emotions due to the inbuilt conditioning of our forefathers, who said that we must be strong, stoic and overly masculine. But showing vulnerability from a healthy masculine state can be very attractive, and can lead to a stronger relationship.
