Recovery Tips From A Trauma Survivor

Published: March 26, 2020, midnight

It’s a unique conversation today, as Lyn and her special guest, Dr Leonie Mattison, discuss the unusual subject of being in a relationship with a trauma survivor. Having herself survived a traumatic relationship, Dr Leonie speaks about the lasting effects from personal experience. In this week’s show, she joins Lyn to share the many practical techniques she employed to heal from the trauma which allowed her to thrive and move on. KEY TAKEAWAYS Despite jumping bravely back into the dating pool, Leonie soon came to realise that she needed time to heal herself first, before she gave her heart to someone new. Through her personal faith, Dr Leonie gave herself permission to face her trauma and be assertive about the way she was treated. Witnessing a deeply distressing or disturbing experience, or being a part of it, can massively effect our lives and productivity. It is a genuine form of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Avoiding certain types of foods, including sugars, meats and caffeine, can help to lift your mood and improve feelings of self-esteem. Self-affirmation and appreciation was the key to Leonie recovering her sense of self-worth. This was achieved through a process called “Mirror Work” When we speak things aloud, the brain connects to it much faster. Vocalisation is affirmation. When we share our goodness, that goodness comes back to us. By spreading love, we increase the love in the world. When we dedicate ourselves to a positive practice for 21 days, it has a profound effect on our psyche and wellbeing. Leonie spent 21 days telling herself that she loved the woman she was. It led to a greater sense of self-empowerment and belief. You can’t hold on to people and pain that are toxic to your heart, or you’ll get sick. You have to let them / it go.
