How To Talk To Strangers

Published: Oct. 2, 2019, 11 p.m.

Taking the first steps in approaching people we don’t know is difficult enough, but the feeling of unease is often amplified when we’re hoping to form a romantic relationship.  Lyn is joined today by Nathan Segal, an expert in long-lasting relationships, and a self-professed “natural connector” of people, to discuss the ways in which we can improve our own self-belief, and by doing so, increase our confidence in talking to strangers and forming new relationships. But more than this, Nathan and Lyn also discuss the fascinating topic of what to do when the connection has begun… KEY TAKEAWAYS Many pick-up artists use scripts, lines or pick-ups in order to start conversations. But what happens when you run out of material? The best way is to just be yourself and speak from your heart. A great tip for approaching new people is to find out what they’re talking about. Decide if there is common ground. Does this person interest you? What happens if we engage with someone and subsequently discover that we don’t wish to pursue it further? Nathan shares the “pattern interrupt” which breaks rapport, and also the slow disengage. Or why not simply tell the truth? State that you believe the conversation isn’t working for either of you. Remember that being honest is one thing. Being rude is another. It’s entirely possible to be honest in a polite way. A major problem many people have, is social anxiety. The people who are really suffering are those who are overly focused on themselves. By removing the inward focus, we can easily dissipate the anxiety. Many people think that suicide is an answer to a single problem; that by destroying the body, they destroy the problem. If a person is talking about it, then that’s a sign that they want help. A simple but effective way to change your confidence level is to simply raise your chest up, which forces your head to raise and your shoulders to roll back. It lifts your mood in seconds, as well as improves your breathing and posture. BEST MOMENTS ‘My natural ability is to be a connector. It’s what I’m good at’ ‘When someone is contemplating suicide. What is it in them that wants to die?’ ‘Because of the inward focus, we can lose sight of what is the reality’ ‘Direct your attention outwards on other people. Stop negatively focusing on yourself’ ‘A lot of people have a problem with honesty’ ‘Exit: stage left!'   VALUABLE RESOURCES Hearts Entwined Podcast -Apple Podcasts (iTunes) -Spotify -Stitcher   ABOUT THE GUEST Nathan Segal has worked in the fields of computer graphics, photography and writing for over 30 years.
