Healing After Domestic Violence

Published: Sept. 2, 2020, 11 p.m.

After enduring years of emotional, psychological, verbal and mental abuse, September Burton finally found the courage not just to break free, but to become a champion for other women going through the same traumatic experiences.  In this week’s show, September joins Lyn to discuss the long road to healing and how she found the strength to take back control. KEY TAKEAWAYS When women heal together, they create an indefinable, unbreakable and rather magical bond that lasts a lifetime. Gaslighting is a practice where one person uses psychological manipulation in order to make another person believe that they are experiencing an event in a different way. It originated from the play ‘Gaslight’ by Patrick Hamilton, in which a husband manipulates his wife into thinking that she is going mad. People in abusive relationships can often be led to believe that the fault is theirs, and that the problems can be worked out through counsellors and therapy. This is not the case. It is a matter of changing one’s perception in order to recognise that the fault is not theirs. Lovebombing is the practice by where initial declarations of love by a partner build up our confidence, so that we become addicted to them. But then they withdraw these affirmations, and we allow ourselves to become subject to their will. BEST MOMENTS ’The healing journey was a beautiful, beautiful experience for me’ ‘For my own safety, for my own health, for my own wellbeing, I need to go’ ‘Once you start to understand their narcissism, they become extremely predictable’ ‘If you see behind the mask, there’s nothing there. There’s no depth to who they are' VALUABLE RESOURCES Hearts Entwined Podcast Apple Podcasts (iTunes) Spotify Stitcher ABOUT THE GUEST September iBurton is passionate about living a life of purpose, sharing her knowledge on the healing power of food, and empowering and freeing women from the debilitating shame and guilt that often accompanies domestic violence.
