Alexander Polzin, Thoughtful Thursday

German sculptor Alexander Polzin joins Gianna Volpe on-air to discuss his work ahead of tonight’s lecture at Longhouse Reserve. The lecture will be paired with a musical piece made by Greek composer Konstantia Gourzi in honor of one of Polzin’s pieces, performed by the American quartet Hammermusik. Polzin specializes in Bronze-cast sculptures initially made with wood. The piece of his at Longhouse is entitled “Parthenope” in honor of a siren who, in Greek mythology, drowns herself after failing to entice Odysseus. Polzin believes Parthenope’s suicide is the result of her attempt to end the “Devil’s circle” inherent to the sirens’ objective: attracting sailors with song before ultimately drowning them.
