Rural healthcare is tough marketplace. There are a few stand out facilities that have managed to buck the trend but for many the struggle to create a viable healthcare business in a difficult market is a challenge. A marketplace that often finds large proportions of the people in the catchment area in poor health and from lower socioeconomic groups. That same population is widely dispersed, and low density make economies of scale difficult to find and sustain. For rural healthcare the facility may be the only one for miles around leaving the population with limited local choices unless they elect to take the long drive to urban facilities that can be hours away.
