I’ve never lived through a war on my country’s soil. But I live in Seattle, Washington and it feels a bit like a war zone, with all the emergency Corona Virus procedures, rules, regulations, fear and yes, death. Then I pause and consider what would it have been like to live in Poland during World War II? Even worse, what would it have been like to be a Jew in Poland during World War II, like my in-laws, Sam and Esther? Of the 3.3 million Jews who called Poland home before the war, only 300,000 (10%) survived. That was true fear. If they were caught, especially in hiding, they would have been murdered immediately. I am grateful that I live in a country that is NOT at war, just fighting a virus that doesn’t give a damn about borders or ethnicity. I am grateful that I live in a country that cares about our health and welfare. I am grateful for my local community, responding to our current challenges with kindness and support for those in need of help. Show your gratitude – reach out and help someone in your community.
