#32: Dani: Attempting suicide at 14 and my life and mental health journey since then

Published: Nov. 23, 2020, 1:29 p.m.

In 2010, a then 14 year old Dani attempted suicide. After that experience, she was hospitalized and found a therapist to help with her mental health.

In this episode, Dani, now 24 talks about her life journey and her advice for anyone suffering from mental health problems.

Topics Covered in this Interview:

- Being multiracial (having a Spanish, African American, and Asian background)

- Struggles of being multiracial and not feeling a whole part of any community (i.e. not feeling Asian enough, black enough to associate with Asian community or black community)

- Her experience being in an abusive relationship

- Her mental health journey - when her depression and anxiety started, her suicidal ideations, her attempted suicide, and how therapy has helped her

- Losing her friend Meg Durand to a mental health battle

- Being sexually assaulted at 18

Dani was incredibly brave in doing this interview and sharing her story.

She hopes that anyone in a bad mental health place can

1) feel like its okay to have mental health problems and she hopes that sharing her experience destigmatizes any feeling of weakness someone may be feeling because of their mental health troubles

2) hopefully learn from her experience and apply lessons to their own life to try and improve their mental health
