The book of 1 Kings tells the story of a nation in decline. It tells the story of the nation of Israel over the span of several hundred years. The book picks up just before the high-water mark in Israel’s history. Solomon is crowned king and proceeds to expand the empire and build a temple for the worship of Yahweh, the One true God. Despite the glory of Solomon and the stunning achievement of the construction of the temple, we see cracks in the foundation of the great nation of Israel that will ultimately lead to destruction. Over the course of 1 Kings, we will see Israel’s unfaithfulness and God’s relentless faithfulness and love for his people. The Hebrew kings provide us with a sobering look at the consequences of rejecting God’s rule.
